Renters and Adopting

Message for Renters Considering Adoption

Before adopting a dog — especially a large breed or a pit bull–type dog — it’s incredibly important for renters to make sure their housing allows pets. Far too many wonderful dogs end up surrendered simply because their families didn’t confirm the rules first.

Here’s what every renter should do before adopting:

- Check your lease for pet policies, breed restrictions, weight limits, and fees.

- Get written approval from your landlord or property manager — verbal permission isn’t enough.

- Ask about insurance requirements or additional deposits.

- Confirm rules for shared spaces like yards, patios, and dog areas.

- Be honest with the rescue about your living situation so the right match can be made.

Adopting a dog is a lifelong commitment. Making sure your home truly allows them is the first step in giving them the safe, stable life they deserve — especially for pit bulls, who are too often returned due to housing issues.
